After viewing a few Jackson Pollock paintings at a modern museum where he added rocks to his paintings, I thought about trying it myself. Don't we all say that when we leave a museum? "Oh, I could do that."
Well I had a box of rocks and I had wondered for the longest what to do with them. A paper weight? Mix em with some sand for a decorative piece of?? My boss I had a few years ago had given them to me when she returned from a trip to Hawaii, lava rocks from a volcano. All I could think of was Charlie Brown at Halloween, getting a bag full of rocks.

For the base coat, I mixed in the rocks with molding paste, black acrylic paint with high gloss to add shine. It ended up looking like black glass on a road, black asphalt. Next I added a thin watery coat of blue paint on top, from the bottom almost to the top of the painting. Lastly, I covered the top and bottom with newspaper to block the white latex paint I scattered in the middle. This is what has the Pollock look to it.

I'd consider this painting a fair attempt at a good painting. I haven't painted anything as good since. I'm still working on it though. One of my friends helped me with the name of the painting. I've shortened it here for certain reasons. Click on the attachments to view the full size painting and the closeup of rocks.
