Fanged Love - Part 3 Refusal
Victoria stared at the alarm clock as it danced on her nightstand. "7:15. Late for work again. Five more minutes," she grumbled. She slapped the snooze button and rolled over.
"I noticed you haven't been listening to me lately. What's wrong with you? I know something's wrong."
Victoria's eyes snapped open. "Daisy?" The white cat continued sleeping on her pillow by her. "Was that you?" She scratched her head and closed her eyes again. Five more minutes.
"Oh I understand. Just five more minutes, little lady. Come on. Is that what you've reduced yourself to? A prisioner to time?" The voice mused. "Hear me, Victoria!"
Victoria jerked up and glared into the darkness. Red hues of light streamed into the room from the street signs. Suddenly a stabbing pain entered her left temple. It twisted to the back of her skull. She grabbed for her pillow as she fell out of the bed. Daisy fled the room. "Okay, okay. Stop it!!" she shrieked.
"Why do you make me go to such extremes? I just want to talk to you."
"I should have known that was you, Nathan. Can't just fly in the window like most freaks, can you?" She sat on the floor rubbing her face as the piercing pains subsided. "Don't you have normal ways of contacting me like the telephone?"
"Yes, of course I do. If you would just answer me... You've been ignoring me for weeks now.
Surely you knew I'd be back. I have so much to tell you!" He bent down to her and extended his hand.
Victoria pulled herself up without taking his hand and crossed the room to keep some distance between them. "Look Nathan. I'm not interested. You need to leave me alone."
"Don't be like that. This is for us. I brought you out of that chaos that night. You are what you are now all because of me. Don't think differently. We are the future. Don't you remember anything from that night?"
Victoria turned away from him as she inched her way to the door. She had to leave quickly. She could feel her anger rising. She grabbed her coat and car keys. Nathan blocked her exit and jerked her arm back as she passed in front of him. He pulled her into his arms. "What is wrong? Why won't you talk to me. Look at me!"
"You wanna talk? Sure let's talk! You were the one who put me there. I know you say you saved my life but you turned me into a freak! Did you ever think for once that maybe I didn't want this? I'm not going with you. I'm staying here, in this world. How many times must we discuss this?"
Victoria dropped her coat and looked down at it. Her eyes were fixed on the black leather. Nathan stepped back away from her, realizing her body was burning hot to the touch. He followed her gaze and saw smoke rising from the leather as it started to burn. Suddenly the coat ignited. Flames rose up.
Nathan waved his hand across the fire, immediately extingishing it. The coat began to smoldered on the floor.
Victoria jumped on the bed and covered her face with a pillow. She cried. Nathan sat down by her. He listened to her as she rolled through wave after wave of anguish.
"We'll learn how to control our powers, my love. It seems I am the ice to your fire. I'm not sure how that happened. See? Feel how cold my hand is now. Here let me soothe your pain." He gathered her into his arms, rocking her as she tried to gather her composure.
Momentarily defeated, she snuggled into his arms. Her eyes dimmed from their radiant color of rust orange to a light brown. She could feel the hot tears running down her face starting to cool just by his touch.
"You and I are one, my love," he whispered in her ear. "We must stay together if we are going to survive, whatever world we choose. Calm down now. I have such things to tell you!"
Victoria felt her body sink into a hibernation of sorts as Nathan held her. His control over her was absolute.
